We were recently invited to try this new Thai place in Phase V Defence, the City Café and Grill. After two very filling courses, here’s what we think about the place!
We arrived at a very well-lit café in the heart of the Phase V market a little after noon. What appealed to us were the covers of famous songs being played on the stereo as we were escorted to our seats. We began with the appetizers from their Chinese, Thai and Continental menu. We ordered their recommended City Special Prawns and Chicken Cheese Fingers. Where both arrived quickly and were fresh, we had a mixed opinion about the taste. The crust of the chicken cheese fingers was lacking in taste even though they were fresh and very crispy to bite. The prawns on the other hand were coated in a thin layer of a delectable sauce. What we especially appreciated was how fresh the prawns were.
The main course took a little over 30 minutes to arrive; we ordered the chef recommended Baked Fish in Butter Lime Sauce, Chicken Parmesan and Egg Fried Rice with Hot Garlic Chicken. This was paired with their Mojito and Orange Strawberry Fresh Juice. Where the drinks were immensely refreshing in Lahore’s heat, the food didn’t have a ton to offer. It was evident that the fish was not their area of expertise. We were expecting a melt-in-your-mouth fish fillet in the most delectable butter sauce, it looked more like the fillet had been lathered in a typical Asian curry. So it was understandable that we didn’t turn towards the fish again after just a bite or two.
The Chicken Parmesan, on the other hand, was absolutely delicious. It was warm and came in the tastiest and creamiest sauce. The mashed potatoes were another item we couldn’t stop eating. Mashed to perfection, this creamy lump was gone within minutes. The vegetables with both the fish and the chicken were sautéed and steamed to perfection and this added color and taste to the dishes.
We will give this café extra points for their serving size. The rice came in a big heap and was very flavorful to make up for the lack of flavor in the Hot Garlic Chicken.
Despite the minor issues that were easy to overlook, the food was warm and cooked with care and that was evident in presentation. The ambiance had something mild to it that immediately put us to ease.
Overall, here is how we would rate it:
