As Lahoris, gastronomy is our favourite past time. Whether it’s a new hip cafe in the poshest location, or a roadside dhaaba that tickles our taste buds, Lahoris embrace it all with equal warmth and acceptance. Food, thus, transcends the class barrier!
Every time a new eatery opens up, you see flocks of people embarking on this gourmandise adventure and I also happened to scurry my way into the mad house that was Buffalo Wings & Rings, on its launch. Right in the heart of the city, the restaurant is situated on the busy M. M. Alam road, over the Levi’s store. So one rather hot afternoon, I visited the restaurant to give it a try.
Having a primarily dark interior, with witty phrases on the walls and a bar-like, live drinks station, the place has a clean vibe. There is an outdoor seating area available as well but I would much rather bask in the beautiful sunlight coming in through the glass wall, with the air conditioner blasting right over me in the scorching summer heat. What I particularly liked was that each table had a few wet wipes which was very thoughtful. Some of the most high end restaurants don’t bother with any. So that was really appreciated.
Once settled, I began perusing through a sufficiently stocked menu that ranged from salads to a different dessert each day! I took a little help from the server who guided me through the appetizers menu and recommended Spinach & Artichoke Dip and Buffalo Chicken Quesadilla (pictures below). In addition, I ordered a Pina Colada from the Mocktails options.
I started with the dip that was served with piping hot flash fried pita chips and just loved the stringy consistency of the dip, courtesy the mozzarella cheese! Taste-wise, it was different but in a good way. Will I order it again though? I don’t think so! The second on the list was the quesadilla and I’m definitely ordering it again the next time I visit! Just the right taste, a little spicy but not too much, with just enough meat and veggies mixed with cheese sauce and served with bleu cheese. This my friends is the recipe to one of the best tortillas I’ve ever had locally. You might think that’s too much cheese but it was not. It tasted perfect!
With my expectations quite high by now, I ordered Crispy Tenders, 6 of them, each in a different flavour with ranch sauce. There are 10 different flavours that you can choose from and 4 different levels of spiciness. I went with Buffalo, Garlic Parmesan, Sweet & Sour, Sweet BBQ, Lemon Pepper and Crazy, the last two being the server’s recommendations. I chose the Med-Hot spice level which was perfect for me. From the burgers menu, I ordered the Buffalo Ringer Burger. Unfortunately, the “rings” were unavailable which was quite ironic seeing that the place is named Buffalo Wings & RINGS!
Anyway, the wings definitely lived up to the expectations, with my absolute favourites being sweet BBQ and lemon pepper. The latter has a tangy, juicy quality to it which you will only be able to appreciate after trying it. They weren’t super crispy like KFC Fried Chicken and quite soft to chew on. But there was no other way I would have wanted them. None of the other flavours fell in the “bad” category; they were either above average or average. I wasn’t too psyched about the ranch sauce and skipped it completely as the taste of each one of the tenders was sufficient to tickle my taste buds.
Next came the burger. I especially ordered the Buffalo special because usually, that is supposed to be the best out of the lot. I was a tad bit disappointed with it though. The coleslaw was a little too sweet and the burger was barely above average to say the least.
As far as the fries are concerned, well you might say that no one can go wrong with FRIES! But rest assured, I’ve had bad experiences. However, the fries were perfectly salted with a little pepper that enhance the taste rather than adding to the spice level which is exactly how I would’ve wanted it. The drink was also quite refreshing!
Over all, the quesadilla and the wings were the highlight of my lunch. The taste was above average. They took around 20-25 minutes to serve each course which perhaps is a little more considering the type of menu. But I think I’ll be visiting them soon again!
